The Rockets and Green Made History with New Deal

The deal will include a third-year player option that provides Green with the ability to earn more than $240 million total over the next five years. Jalen Green is the first NBA player ever to successfully negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine-figure deal.

Green averaged 19.6 points on 42.3 percent shooting (33.2 percent from three), 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in his third NBA campaign last season

Jalen's Position in Houston was Not Solidified Prior to Deadline

There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Green last season and his job security on the Rockets ahead of the trade deadline. Though a proven solid scorer, officials around the league were quick to point out the guard's inefficiency as cause for concern. Then, seemingly overnight, Green was able to improve his jumper as the season came to a close. Green averaged 30.2 points on 50% shooting from the field and 45% from 3 in March, willing Houston to an 11-game win streak.

During an end-of-season presser in April, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka praised his young guard for his continued dedication and production considering his on-court woes.

"[Green] had his ups and downs, but the thing I love about him is his resiliency," Udoka said. "He played 82 games. He played through fatigue, frustration and he never complained about it, never wavered from the work he put in."

With his new contract, Jalen Green adds to the star-studded list of young talent from the 2021 draft class to receive an extension including number one pick Cade Cunningham.
