Some NBA players really don't understand how to spend their money or really even how much money they are making. Josh Smith definitely falls into this category. He signed with the Los Angeles Clippers for the veteran's minimum —- $1.5 million —- this offseason in hopes of reviving his struggling career and eventually getting one more good pay day.
However, he's not only going to make the vet's minimum this year, he is going to be getting $5.4 million because of his prior deal with the Detroit Pistons who ended up waiving the forward. Smith wanted everyone to know that this year is really going to be a struggle for him financially.
"At the end of the day, you know, I do have a family," Smith said. "So it is going to be a little harder on me this year. But I'm going to push through it, you know. ... I made a decision for me and my family."
What was that decision? To play professional basketball and make almost $100 million over the course of your career? I get that your budget was just cut in half for the season —- he was set to make $14 million this season with Detroit —- but you're saying that $6.9 million still can't get the job done? It seems like Smith will have to tone down his lavish lifestyle and learn how to budget better or he could actually be in trouble.
