Durant Wants Fans to Enjoy Games, Says Ratings Issue is Complex
During his postgame presser Wednesday night Durant was asked about his team's perfect 6-for-6 start from beyond the arc. Seemingly prepared for the question, the veteran said, "We know the fans hate 3s, but we generated a lot of them just from getting into the paint and kicking them out."
The 18-year veteran has been known to keep his finger on the league's pulse and has recently become aware of the NBA's low viewership issue. When asked for comment on the recent discourse about ratings for games Durant was quick to advocate a defense for fellow players, claiming that, "Something that big, it's not just one component of why it's going that way.
"I feel like it's a lot of different reasons why viewership may be down, but that's another discussion."
Kevin Durant added that seeing the excitement around Christmas games felt promising for the future and that he hopes the momentum will carry for the remainder of the season.
LeBron James Among Those Concerned About 3-Point Volume
Lakers superstar LeBron James also touched on the issue of high volume three-point shooting games while discussing the NBA's new All-Star Game format a few weeks back.
"I have my ideas of what could possibly work, but I'm not gonna [get into it]... We gotta do something.
"It's not just the All-Star Game. It's our game in general. Our game, there's a lot of f—ing 3s being shot. So it's a bigger conversation than just the All-Star Game."
The NBA announced Thursday the league had its most-watched Christmas Day in five years with the viewership up 84% from last year across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, Disney+ and ESPN+. The average viewership was 5.25 million per game Wednesday.
