Billionaire NBA Team Owner Targeted in Alleged 10-Figure Extortion Attempt

This one reads more like a movie script than an NBA headline.

Wesley Edens, the billionaire co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, was allegedly the target of a massive blackmail scheme, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

Federal prosecutors say Changli "Sophia" Luo, 46, has been charged with multiple counts, including blackmail and destruction of records. The allegations are serious. The numbers involved are even bigger.

According to the report, Luo allegedly threatened to release intimate photos and videos of Edens and contacted people close to him, including family members, over a period of months.

That's where things escalated quickly.

Prosecutors claim the two initially connected on LinkedIn in 2022 and later became romantically involved. From there, the situation allegedly spiraled into threats and demands.

At one point, Luo is accused of seeking an enormous payout. We're talking $1.2 billion, roughly half of Edens' estimated net worth.

Let that sink in for a second.

Edens has not commented publicly beyond a statement through a spokesperson, saying he expects to testify and that the indictment speaks for itself.

Luo has pleaded not guilty. She was released on bond, and the case is expected to head to trial later this year.

So where does that leave things?

Right now, it's all in the legal system. Allegations, filings, and a lot still to be sorted out.

Still, it's not every day an NBA owner is tied to a case like this.

This one is just getting started.
