According to ESPN's Shams Charania's sources, the Atlanta Hawks are in position to acquire guard Aaron Wiggins from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Hawks will send two second-round picks to the Thunder, who finished second in the NBA's Western Conference, to acquire the fifth-year veteran.
Wiggins, a second-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, played a key role for the Thunder during the championship season in 2024-25. He played in 76 games while averaging 12.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 22.9 minutes played.
Last season, he averaged 9.4 points and 3.1 rebounds. He played in 65 games as the Thunder made it to the Western Conference Finals.
Now, Wiggins will attempt to help the Hawks move past the first round of the Eastern Conference, where their championship dreams died last season.
According to ESPN, this move helped the Thunder with some financials. The team reduces its projected tax penalty from $213 million to $152 million. Wiggins was set to count for $9,028,038 in luxury tax next season while continuing on his five-year, $45 million contract.
The deal with the Thunder is not the only move that the Hawks made over the weekend. The team also worked out a deal with CJ McCollum. He will return to the Hawks on a one-year, $21 million contract extension after averaging 18.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 28.8 minutes played.
McCollum would become a free agent by June 30 if the Hawks had not worked out an extension. Now that the team has completed the deal, it can welcome back a player who made an impact during the playoffs.
McCollum helped the Hawks take a first-round series lead over the eventual champion Knicks. He scored 32 points during Game 2 as the Hawks defeated the Knicks 107-106. He then hit the jump shot in Game 3 to secure the 109-108 win.
