NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo broke the news on Wednesday morning. They reported that Monken will move from his role of Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator. He will stay in the AFC North while taking over the Cleveland Browns.

Monken will become the 11th head coach of the team since the 2000 season. He will have the task of getting this team back into contention for wins, playoff appearances, and division crowns after two consecutive losing seasons.

The Browns only have three playoff appearances since 2000 and no division titles since the 1989 season when coach Bud Carson led the team to the conference championship game.

Monken is a familiar name to Browns fans. He previously spent the 2019 season as offensive coordinator in Cleveland while working under head coach Freddie Kitchen. The team went 6-10 and finished third in the AFC North.

The Browns offense ranked 22nd in passing with Baker Mayfield under center and 12th in rushing with Nick Chubb leading the way.

Monken followed up his lone season in Cleveland with three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs (2020-2022). The SEC team won back-to-back National Championships in this span (2021-2022).

Monken then moved back to the NFL in 2023. He became the offensive coordinator for the Ravens and helped lead the team to the AFC championship while working with quarterback Lamar Jackson, running back Gus Edwards, tight end Mark Andrews, and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

The Ravens ranked sixth in total offense this season as Jackson won his second league MVP award.

The 2024 season featured even more success on offense. The Ravens ranked first in total offense, second in passing offense, and first in rushing yards. Jackson finished second behind Bills quarterback Josh Allen in the MVP voting.

This season, the Ravens struggled early in the year while losing five of the first six games. Once the team returned from the Bye week, it rattled off five straight wins to get back into playoff contention.

The AFC North team still showcased talent in the rushing attack while ranking second overall, but the passing attack fell to 16th in the league. The Ravens ultimately missed the playoffs due to a Week 18 loss to the rival Steelers, which led to the team firing head coach John Harbaugh.

With Monken taking over as head coach of the Browns, only two openings remain. The Cardinals and the Raiders are the only teams with spots to fill after the 2025 season.
