Los Angeles Chargers defender Tony Jefferson had to issue an apology on Sunday afternoon after he flipped off fans of the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Jefferson made the gesture following an on-field scuffle. He received an unnecessary roughness penalty for a helmet-to-helmet hit on wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who went into concussion protocol. Officials then disqualified Jefferson after a skirmish also involving receiver Rashee Rice.
As Jefferson left the field, he flipped both middle fingers to the Chiefs fans. The Chargers went on to defeat the Chiefs 16-13, officially eliminating the AFC West rivals from playoff contention.

"First and foremost, I want to apologize for the gesture I made to the Chiefs fans," Jefferson said in the locker room after the game. "I apologize. I was caught up in the moment.
"I don't know if it was caught on TV or not, but if it was, I apologize. I'm classier than that. I have kids (who) are watching, so I apologize for that."
Jefferson, now in his 11th season in the NFL, originally retired in May 2023. He missed his Age 31 season but ultimately came out of retirement in 2024 to play for the Chargers. He appeared in eight games while starting four.
Jefferson returned to the Chargers to kick off the 2025 season. He missed the first three games as a healthy inactive but has been in the lineup since Sept. 15. He has delivered a team-leading four interceptions and has posted 32 combined tackles.
Many of the veteran defender's hits have been on the larger side. This includes a hit on Rice earlier in the AFC West rivalry game, which forced an incompletion.
Jefferson could continue to play a sizable role on the Chargers defense as the team continues to fight for a division crown. The team is 10-4 after beating the Chargers and continues to chase the AFC West-leading Broncos, who entered the weekend with an 11-2 record.
