"The last 18 years have been full of traumatic injuries to both my head and my body. I'm not complaining, just stating a fact. Has the damage to my brain already been done? Do I have CTE? I hope I don't, but over 90% of the brains of former NFL players that have been examined showed signs of the disease. I am terrified."

Monroe played in the NFL for seven seasons — three and a half with the Jacksonville Jaguars and two and a half with the Baltimore Ravens, earning three Pro Bowl selections.

Monroe was an advocate for the usage of marijuana among NFL players, citing the drug as a pain-killing option. He becomes the latest under-30 player in what has become a trend to walk away from the game at a young age with a focus on his long-term health.
