Baker Mayfield a surprising Pro Bowl Games snub

The NFL has released the full AFC and NFC rosters for the Pro Bowl Games, which take place the weekend before the Super Bowl. The list included many expected names, but one prominent quarterback remained absent.

Baker Mayfield was not one of the three quarterbacks to make the NFC roster. Jared Goff took the starting spot after leading the Lions to a 14-2 record.

Sam Darnold joined him in the lineup after a career-best season in which he led the Vikings to a 14-2 record. Rookie Jayden Daniels took the final spot after leading the Commanders to a playoff berth.

Mayfield hasn't yet secured a playoff berth for the Buccaneers. He can do so in Week 18 with a win against the 5-11 Saints. What he does have, however, is the second-most passing yards in the NFC (4,279).

The only player in the conference with more passing yards is Goff (4,398). Darnold is third with 4,153 yards while Daniels is eighth with 3,530 yards.

Of course, passing yards are only one factor that voters examine during the process. Mayfield tied Goff for the best completion percentage in the conference (71.2) among full-time starters. He leads the NFC with 39 passing touchdowns. This stat ties AFC Pro Bowl Games quarterback Lamar Jackson for the second-most touchdowns in the league.

The key detail to highlight in Mayfield's production is the turnover on the Buccaneers offense. He lost standout receiver Chris Godwin to a season-ending injury in Week 7. Perennial 1,000-yard receiver Mike Evans missed multiple games in the middle of the season.

Mayfield had to rely heavily on tight end Cade Otton (600 yards), running back Bucky Irving (397 yards), running back Rachaad White (393 yards), wide receiver Jalen McMillan (387 yards), and wide receiver Sterling Shepard (323 yards) while keeping the Buccaneers in the mix for the playoffs.

While Mayfield didn't make the initial Pro Bowl Games roster, he will be in line for a potential spot depending on the outcome of the playoffs. He is one of the official alternates and will take one of the three quarterback spots if Goff, Darnold, or Daniels can't participate due to injury or if their teams make the Super Bowl.
