ESPN analyst destroys top Heisman candidate: "He's an undrafted free agent"

He'll be drafted, but should he?

Baker Mayfield has been a heck of a player for the Oklahoma Sooners for the past few seasons. In fact, he's been a Heisman Trophy contender for most of his time in Norman, and this season, the very same thing can be said.

Mayfield has helped lead Oklahoma to a 10-1 record and the Sooners are currently ranked No. 4 in the College Football Playoff Rankings. When it comes to the Heisman race, Mayfield is right up there with the likes of Stanford running back Bryce Love, Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. In fact, Mayfield may be the favorite.

He's thrown for 3,816 yards and 34 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions. He's also rushed for five touchdowns, proving to be a decent-dual-threat.

For all intents and purposes, Mayfield is the real deal at Oklahoma, and he's proven that consistently since the 2015 season. Still, one ESPN analyst and former NFL tight end, Anthony Becht, just can't see the Oklahoma quarterback translating to the next level.

Becht takes it a step further than that, though. He doesn't even think Mayfield is worth a draft pick.

"I laugh a bit at these Baker Mayfield discussions," Becht tweeted. "Great college player but he's an undrafted free agent. He's no Drew Brees either, let's stop that talk. I'd even bet there's zero GMs debating this currently, at least the ones I know. "

It's worth noting that Becht did admit that he knows Mayfield will be drafted, it's more so that he doesn't feel Mayfield is worth a draft pick — anything after the fourth round would be more acceptable to the 12 year NFL veteran.

Digging deeper into Becht's tweets he went on to clarify that he thinks it's a maturity and skill set thing for Mayfield. The second point is a bit harder to argue because of how good he's been at Oklahoma over the past few seasons. Maturity, well, that point is a bit easier taken.

The fact of the matter is that Mayfield will be drafted. There are plenty of quarterback-hungry NFL teams and Mayfield is a big enough name, potentially even a Heisman Trophy winner, to justify a draft pick.

But will he pan out? Plenty of top college quarterbacks before Mayfield haven't, so at this point that seems to be a fair question.
