The Bears are doing the math. And Tremaine Edmunds is feeling it.

Chicago has given the veteran linebacker permission to seek a trade, according to multiple reports, signaling a clear shift as the team reshapes its roster around the salary cap. Edmunds is due $15 million, and that number is doing most of the talking right now.
This is not a performance decision. Edmunds has been a central piece of the Bears' defense since arriving three seasons ago. Even with injuries limiting him to 13 games last season, he still led the team with 112 tackles. When he has been on the field, he has been exactly what he was billed to be. Reliable. Physical. Steady in the middle.
The #Bears have granted permission for LB Tremaine Edmunds to seek a trade, according to a league source. He's under contract for the '26 season at $15M. Still young and was Pro Bowl-caliber player thru first 10 games before minor injury. Finished year healthy. Led D in tackles.

But cap pressure changes everything.
Chicago entered the offseason over the limit, and bigger decisions are coming. Most notably, the organization has to start planning for a massive extension for quarterback Caleb Williams. That reality forces tough calls, even on productive veterans.
Edmunds, a former Pro Bowler from his time with the Buffalo Bills, immediately becomes one of the top linebackers available. He can anchor a defense, communicate calls, and clean up mistakes. Plenty of contenders could use that.
For the Bears, this feels like the beginning, not the end. Cap casualties are rarely isolated. Chicago is choosing flexibility over familiarity.
And Edmunds is officially on the market.
