Bengals' Joe Burrow admits game 'isn’t as fun as before,' sparks concern over future

Joe Burrow didn't sound like a quarterback having the time of his life on Wednesday. Not even close.

The Bengals star met with reporters and dropped a few comments that turned heads around the NFL, hinting at deeper frustrations as he works his way back from a brutal Grade 3 turf toe injury.

"If I want to keep doing this, then what am I trying to do with myself?" Burrow told reporters. "And I have to have fun doing it. If it's not fun, then what am I doing it for?"

That line alone set off alarms for fans. Burrow admitted winning is still enjoyable, but overall? "Was it as fun as before? No, I wouldn't say it was that way."

Since returning, Burrow has delivered one big win over Baltimore and a wild shootout loss in Buffalo that all but sunk Cincinnati's playoff hopes. Behind the No. 28-ranked offensive line, he's being pressured on nearly a quarter of his dropbacks — one of the worst marks in football.

Burrow didn't point to a single moment when the joy faded.

"Reflection ... on a lot of things that I've done and been through in my career," he said. "I've been through more than most. Certainly not easy on the brain or body, so just trying to have fun doing it again."

He then added the most ominous line of the day: "There's just a lot of things going on right now — football-related, personally, all the above."

Burrow has dealt with constant hits, major injuries, and even off-field drama, including the home break-in last season that became national news. The Bengals' inability to fix their offensive line and their reputation for tight budgeting hasn't helped speculation about his long-term future in Cincinnati.

Some around the league are already wondering if this could be the early stages of an eventual trade request or even a conversation about retirement down the road.

For now, Burrow plays on. The Bengals face the rival Ravens on Sunday, but the bigger story may be whether their franchise quarterback still sees happiness in Cincinnati.
