Speaking with Jim Gray on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Belichick acknowledged that he believed NFL teams would have shown interest in him, but ultimately, the opportunity with North Carolina was too good to pass up.
"I think there would've been some interest, but in the end, really, it's not about what could've been or would've been, it's about the opportunity at North Carolina," Belichick said. "I think this program is in the right spot now to take off."
The 71-year-old coach has long been associated with football excellence, and while his NFL tenure has been legendary, Belichick sees a unique challenge in college football. "We're gonna get the team, make it as competitive as we can as soon as we can," he added, signaling that his focus is on turning North Carolina into a powerhouse.
Belichick's buyout with North Carolina, reduced to just $1 million in six months, suggests he has not completely closed the door on a return to the NFL. In fact, it hints that Belichick may be keeping the option open to leave after a couple of years, should an NFL team come calling in 2026. For now, however, he's fully committed to the Tar Heels.
Despite the potential for future NFL offers, Belichick is clearly energized by the challenge at North Carolina. "It's an exciting opportunity for me," he said. And it appears the program may be getting a coach with the kind of pedigree and drive that can make a lasting impact, regardless of the level of competition. For now, it's college football's gain.
