Ahead of the Browns' Week 7 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, Wills made waves when he told reporters he made a "business decision" not to play, only to be benched shortly afterward. This statement prompted a strong reaction, raising questions about his commitment and standing with the team.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski stepped in to clarify during his Wednesday press conference, emphasizing that Wills likely misspoke.
"It was a poor choice of words," Stefanski told Browns reporters, per Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan. "He did not [mean that]. I know what that phrase means. That's not how he meant it." Stefanski's comments aimed to defuse any speculation that Wills' absence against the Bengals was related to his eventual benching.
Wills has struggled to meet expectations at left tackle this season, following knee surgery in December. He revealed to reporters that he continues to deal with complications, including a bruised knee and cartilage damage. Stefanski acknowledged the challenges of Wills' recovery, stating, "I wouldn't categorize it as a setback. It hasn't recovered how quickly he would want it to, and there's obviously times that you maybe tweak an injury or you feel it again and those type of things, but yeah, it's been a tough rehab for him."
With Wills sidelined, rookie Dawand Jones stepped into the left tackle role and is expected to continue as the starter when the Browns face the New Orleans Saints in Week 11. As the team looks to stabilize its offensive line, the focus remains on ensuring both Wills' health and team cohesion moving forward.
