Browns' Myles Garrett Impressed by Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders: 'He Works Hard'

Myles Garrett isn't ready to anoint anyone just yet. But when it comes to rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' All-Pro pass rusher has already seen enough to be encouraged.

"He's funny, he's optimistic, lighthearted, but he works hard," Garrett told reporters after a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers. "He takes it seriously — his craft — and he's watching what the others are doing and doing it his own way, in which only he can."

Sanders, Cleveland's fifth-round pick in this year's NFL Draft, will start at quarterback in the Browns' preseason opener on Friday night. It will be his first time leading the offense in live game action at the pro level, though it comes with a second- and third-string supporting cast. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said most of the team's starters will rest after getting the bulk of the reps earlier in the week.

Garrett said he's noticed Sanders not only observing from the sideline, but also actively seeking out advice.

"He's definitely come to me a couple times to see what I'm thinking when I'm going through my rush or what the defense's mentality is," Garrett said.

The Browns aren't placing lofty expectations on Sanders this early in camp. But the opportunity on Friday is a real one. It's a chance for Sanders to show his command of the offense, his feel in the pocket, and his ability to keep pace against NFL speed.

Garrett's already seen a few traits he likes. Now it's Sanders' turn to put it on display when the lights come on.
