Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Monday that the 39-year-old veteran — and former Super Bowl MVP — will lead the Browns when they open the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. While the team had framed the NFL offseason as an open competition between Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, the decision was not a surprise.

Flacco was always the favorite, especially after staying healthy throughout training camp. Pickett and both rookies missed time with injuries, leaving Stefanski with a clear choice. Flacco also brings familiarity, having gone 5-1 in a memorable late-season run with Cleveland in 2023 that secured a playoff berth.

Last year with Indianapolis, Flacco played in eight games, throwing for 1,761 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He turned 39 in January, but the Browns believe his steady hand gives them the best chance to rebound from a dismal 3-14 campaign.

Sanders generated buzz with a strong preseason debut, but as a fifth-round pick who has battled injuries, he was never expected to take over right away. Gabriel is also considered a developmental option. Pickett, acquired in the offseason, could push for playing time later but is still recovering from his own setbacks.

For Stefanski, now in his sixth season, the decision underscores urgency. Another losing year could cost him his job. Cleveland has invested heavily in its roster and has little patience left after last season's collapse.

Flacco, who owns more than 42,000 career passing yards and 235 touchdown throws, has the résumé. The Browns are betting that experience will help stabilize the franchise and keep them in contention — at least long enough to buy Stefanski some time.
