Browns to start Shedeur Sanders even after Dillon Gabriel clears concussion protocol

Shedeur Sanders made a little Cleveland Browns history on Sunday, becoming the franchise's first rookie quarterback to win his NFL debut since 1995. Now he gets a chance to stack another one.

Coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Monday that Sanders will start again in Week 13 when Cleveland hosts the 49ers.

It will be Sanders' first home start after stepping in for Dillon Gabriel, who suffered a concussion in the Week 11 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Stefanski said Gabriel has cleared the concussion protocol, but the Browns are sticking with the hot hand after Sanders helped deliver a 24-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Sanders finished his debut 11-of-20 for 209 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His lone score came on a 66-yard screen to running back Dylan Sampson, who turned the short throw into a sprint past the entire Raiders defense.

Sanders also set up another touchdown with a 52-yard deep shot to rookie receiver Isaiah Bond.

Believe it or not, the 3-8 Browns are still fighting to stay in the AFC playoff picture. That's how bad things are for the other wild-card contenders — and particularly, the AFC North.

Now, Sanders gets a much bigger test next with the San Francisco 49ers coming to Cleveland on Sunday. But after making a little franchise history in Week 12, he gets his shot at a repeat performance in front of the home crowd.
