The deal will reunite Jones with former Bills interim head coach and coordinator Anthony Lynn, who is now the head coach for the Chargers.
After being considered as a potential first-round pick following the 2014 season at Ohio State, Jones struggled a bit with the Buckeyes' logjam at quarterback in 2015, and he eventually fell into the fourth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Jones spent most of the 2016 NFL season as the third-stringer for the Bills, and he only played in one game for the entire season. Jones completed 6-of-11 pass attempts for 98 yards in his only playing time.
