According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Dobbins suffered a knee sprain. He is expected to miss this weekend's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Rapoport noted that Dobbins' future after that is "up in the air."
Dobbins suffered the injury during Monday night's loss to the Baltimore Ravens, his former team. He left the game before halftime after a tackle by Malik Harrison and multiple other Ravens players. He did not suit up in the second half of the 30-23 loss.
Dobbins had rushed for 40 yards on six carries before his injury. Quarterback Justin Herbert rushed for 29 yards and one touchdown while backup Gus Edwards rushed for 11 yards and a touchdown.
A second-round pick in 2020, Dobbins spent the first three seasons of his career with the Ravens. Injuries limited him to only 24 games, including one in his final season with the Ravens. He rushed for a total of 1,347 yards and 12 touchdowns while in Baltimore.
Dobbins signed a one-year deal with the Chargers ahead of this season as he and Edwards both made the move from Baltimore to Southern California. He has since led the Chargers with 766 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 158 carries.
Edwards, a sixth-year NFL veteran, will now lead the Chargers against the Falcons. He will remain in this role for however long Dobbs remains sidelined. The Bolts are 7-4 after the loss to the Ravens and in second place in the AFC West.
The last time Edwards led a backfield was last season when he started nine of the 17 games he played for the Ravens. Edwards rushed for 810 yards and 13 touchdowns on 198 carries. He added 180 yards as a receiver.
This season, Edwards has 206 yards and one touchdown on 63 attempts. He has averaged 3.3 yards per attempt while working alongside Dobbins.
