Chiefs Coach Andy Reid Speaks out on the Rashee Rice Situation

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was the only notable starter absent from organized team activities this week as he continues serving a 30-day jail sentence in Texas.

Rice, 25, was ordered into custody last week after testing positive for marijuana, a violation of the terms of his probation stemming from a 2024 crash that injured multiple people on a Dallas-area highway.

The Chiefs' top receiver is expected to remain in custody until June 16, causing him to miss the remainder of the team's OTA schedule as well as mandatory minicamp, which is set for June 9-11.

Despite Rice's absence, Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated the organization remains focused on helping the young receiver get back on track.

"We're aware of the situation, and we've talked to the league," Reid told reporters Thursday. "There's been no talk about anything further. We're moving forward."

Reid also acknowledged the challenges Rice is facing.

"It's not an easy thing he's going through," Reid said. "Life lessons are important, but we're all given chances to learn. He's in that position now."

Rice's absence comes shortly after he underwent a cleanup procedure on his right knee. According to ESPN, the surgery was performed to remove loose debris that had been causing inflammation. He is expected to miss roughly two months of football activities, though Reid said the team anticipates Rice will be ready when training camp begins.

In July 2025, Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges related to the highway crash, including collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. He received deferred adjudication and five years of probation.

The incident also led to a six-game NFL suspension last season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Rice emerged as one of Patrick Mahomes' top targets before injuries interrupted his 2025 campaign. The Chiefs now will have to wait a little longer before getting one of their most important offensive playmakers back on the field.
