The Kansas City Chiefs are reuniting with running back Kareem Hunt in the wake of an injury to Isiah Pacheco.
According to multiple NFL insiders, sources say that the Chiefs will sign Hunt after a visit and workout on Tuesday. The veteran running back will start on the practice squad but will ultimately help compensate for the loss of Isiah Pacheco, who suffered a fractured fibula during last weekend's win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Pacheco is expected to miss six to eight weeks as he recovers from the injury.
Hunt started his career with the Chiefs. The team drafted him 86th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. He justified the selection by immediately contributing to the offense.
Hunt rushed for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie. He added 455 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl for the efforts while the Chiefs went 10-6 and won the AFC West. The team lost to the Titans in the Wild Card Round.
The running back's sophomore campaign paled in comparison. Hunt only appeared in 11 games in 2018 while rushing for 824 yards and seven touchdowns. The team released him in November after a video surfaced showing him pushing a woman to the ground and then kicking her.
Hunt signed with the Cleveland Browns ahead of the 2019 season, but the NFL suspended him for the first eight games for violating the personal conduct policy. He did not see his first game action until Week 10.
He remained with the Browns through last season, and he rushed for a total of 2,285 yards and 25 touchdowns while sharing the backfield primarily with Nick Chubb. He added another 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns as a pass-catching option.
Hunt, now 29 years old, will have an opportunity to produce once again for the Chiefs. He will join a backfield that currently includes undrafted rookie Carson Steele and offseason addition Samaje Perine.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire will miss at least the next two games as he spends time on the non-football illness list. Edwards-Helaire revealed ahead of the season that he had missed practice time due to post-traumatic stress disorder.
