The Chiefs wide receiver dislocated his left ankle during Sunday's 30-27 win over the Raiders, ESPN reported, citing NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Team doctors put the ankle back into place, but Thornton was carted off the field and later left Allegiant Stadium on crutches.
The injury came at the end of a 55-yard catch in the fourth quarter. Thornton finished with five receptions for a career-high 111 yards and two touchdowns, helping Kansas City improve to 4-0. He traveled home with the team and was scheduled for a fuller evaluation Monday. The Chiefs consider him out indefinitely; the extent of the injury and his recovery timeline have not been announced. reuters.com
"It sucks that he hurt his ankle on that play, but it was a big play for us," quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters. "It helped us go get the win."
Thornton later posted that he would "be back stronger & better."
Kansas City also lost Rashee Rice to a right hamstring injury in the first quarter. Coach Andy Reid said Rice was held out as a precaution, though the team now has two receiver injuries to sort through after a close divisional win.
As for Thornton, the numbers tell only part of Sunday's story. He delivered the kind of game a receiver remembers. Now the Chiefs are waiting to learn when he can deliver another.
