NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday morning that Humphries has been medically cleared to return to play. The veteran has been recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered last season while playing for the Arizona Cardinals. He had visited the New York Giants earlier in the season but ultimately chose to join a contender.

Hours later, Rapoport reported that Humphries would sign with the Chiefs to provide depth and "potentially more." The deal is for $2 million with a max value of $4.5 million.

A former standout for the University of Florida, Humphries landed with the Arizona Cardinals as the 24th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He became a starter in 2016 and has since gone on to start all 98 games in which he has played. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2021.

The Cardinals released Humphries in March and saved roughly $16 million this season. This move opened up the opportunity for him to sign with any team when healthy.

The offensive line has been a bright spot for the Chiefs this season as the AFC West team has gone 9-1. Guard Joe Thuney and center Creed Humphrey have been the highest-rated players at their respective positions in pass-blocking, per Pro Football Focus.

For comparison, PFF gave Humphries a ranking of 62.5 overall last season after he played 922 snaps and allowed four sacks. This was a decrease from the 2022 season when he earned a ranking of 72.3. He played 575 snaps that season and did not allow a sack.

The tackle position has featured multiple players. According to Sports Illustrated, the Chiefs have rotated rookie Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris at left tackle while trying to win the AFC for the third consecutive season.
