Kaepernick has five years, just under $100 million remaining on his contract in San Francisco. The 49ers will have until April 1 to make a decision on Kaepernick and his $11.9 million guaranteed salary in 2016. According to the report, San Francisco would save $8.5 million by cutting him.
The one-time star quarterback fell out of favor under Jim Tomsula, making way for Blaine Gabbert to take over as starter for the last half of the season. Kaepernick completed just 59 percent of his passes, throwing for six touchdowns, five interceptions and his quarterback rating plummeted to 47, the lowest of his career.
After Ryan Fitzpatrick nearly led the Jets to the playoffs in 2015, New York is reportedly interested in Kaepernick and view Fitzpatrick as a short-term solution "at the right price."
