Commanders Hire 4-Time NBA Champion For Head Coach Search

The Washington Commanders are parting ways with head coach Ron Rivera, and the team is getting creative in their search for the next person in charge of running their franchise.

After announcing that the Commanders had fired Rivera, ESPN insiders Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowksi reported that the Commanders were hiring former Golden State Warriors general manager and four-time NBA champion Bob Myers to help with the coaching search.

Former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman was also hired to help with the coaching search.

Myers is credited as the architect for building one of the most dominant NBA franchises of the last couple decades, helping assemble a Warriors team that won four different NBA titles. He was named the NBA Executive of the Year twice in 2015 and 2017 for his success, stepping down following the 2023 season to work as a TV analyst for ESPN.

Although he doesn't have any experience on the NFL side of things, Myers was likely hired given his ability in a different sport to build a competent (and stable) franchise with minimal turnover on the coaching staff or roster. With the Commanders holding the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the franchise will need to make the right decision at head coach while potentially taking a top quarterback in order to return to being a contender out of the NFC East.

Big changes were expected to happen once Josh Harris bought the Commanders from former owner Dan Snyder, and that's exactly what's happening with the decision to fire Rivera. Now, it will be up to Harris, Myers, and Spielman to find the right head coaching candidate to take over the franchise and usher them into the next era of Commanders football.

The Commanders will have plenty of options to choose from, including in-house candidate Eric Bienemy.
