Dan Marino says Dolphins desperate for a true blue QB battle

Dan Marino still owns Miami when it comes to quarterback takes, and he just dropped one that should make Tua Tagovailoa pay attention.

"You have to have competition at that position," Marino told Mad Dog Sports Radio. "And I think that's probably where the Dolphins have to go."

Marino didn't say whether the competition should come from free agency or inside the building, but he made it clear. No more handing over the starting job. It needs to be earned.

The Dolphins owe Tagovailoa $54 million guaranteed for 2026, which makes things complicated. But Marino made no promises about the former first-rounder's future as QB1.

"Excellent guy, human being, and he's still on the roster," Marino said. "But the new staff is coming in, and they've got to evaluate everything. Right now, Tua's with us... and that's the way it's gonna be."

Translation: The money says Tua starts. The tape says he might not.

With a new regime in the building, there's a real chance Miami rolls into camp with a legit quarterback battle. And if Marino has his way, they better.

Because $54 million or not, the Dolphins need someone who can finally get them over the hump — not just manage games
