The Eagles were in complete control of the NFC Championship on Sunday. The team jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the rival Commanders in the first quarter and did not look back en route to a 55-23 walloping. They built up such an advantage by the fourth quarter that the backups were able to come into the game and burn some clock.
Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels delivered some big plays while trying to become the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to reach the Big Game. He found Terry McLaurin for a long touchdown to bring his team within two points and then he rushed for a touchdown later in the game.
The difference, however, was the number of mistakes committed by the Commanders. Daniels threw an interception, Austin Ekeler lost a fumble, Jeremy McNichols lost a fumble, and Dyami Brown lost a fumble.
The Eagles took the three lost fumbles and turned them into touchdowns. The interception, which Daniels threw in garbage time, also led to points for the Eagles. Rookie running back Will Shipley broke off a 57-yard line to set up first-and-goal. He then rushed for a touchdown to take his team over 50 points.
The turnovers marked a significant change for the Commanders. This is a team that avoided turnovers in the first two rounds of the playoffs and forced five during a divisional-round upset of the Lions. The Commanders capitalized on mistakes by other teams en route to the NFC Championship. However, they could not replicate this against the Eagles.
Philly will now make its third appearance in the Big Game since 2017. The NFC East team has gone 1-1 in its previous trips. The Eagles defeated the Patriots to close out the 2017 season and then lost to the Chiefs to cap off the 2022 season.
Who will the Eagles face in Super Bowl 59? It will either be the Chiefs or the Bills, the two teams who face off in Sunday night's AFC Championship.
