According to TMZ, deputies responded to a life-in-danger call at Oliver's home on the evening of June 28. The first responders learned that the parents had discovered their child unresponsive in the pool.
First responders took the child to the hospital. He was pronounced dead just after 7 p.m.
"On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son," team GM Brandon Beane said in a statement.
"It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss."
Oliver has not spoken about the tragic incident, but he delivered a piece of information to a media member. According to NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe, Oliver is requesting "privacy and prayers at this very difficult time."
A Houston native, Oliver has been with the Buffalo Bills since the 2019 NFL Draft. He entered the league as the ninth overall pick, and he quickly became a key part of the defense.
The veteran has started 86 of the 95 games in which he has played, and he has accounted for 243 combined tackles. He has also posted one interception, nine forced fumbles, 30 sacks, and 76 quarterback hits.
He only played in three games last season due to multiple injuries. He first sustained an ankle injury and then he missed time due to a torn biceps. He also underwent a procedure to repair damage to his meniscus.
Prior to entering the NFL, Oliver spent three seasons playing for the University of Houston. He was a two-time All-American and the 2017 American Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Oliver posted 13.5 sacks during his three-year college career, and he led the conference with 22.5 tackles for a loss as a freshman in 2016.
