The Denver Broncos recently won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning at quarterback, but since his retirement, quarterback play hasn’t been a strength in the mile high city.
Believe it or not, according to Hall of Fame player and current NFL analyst Deion Sanders Manning could still be the answer to Denver’s quarterback problems. Here’s the kicker, though: He’s not talking about Peyton Manning.
No, Sanders thinks Peyton’s brother, Eli Manning, could be the answer for the Broncos at quarterback.
Here’s what “Prime” said when recently discussing the Broncos on his NFL Network show (h/t All22):
“You’re very familiar with the Manning family, especially Archie,” Sanders said. “Call him. It worked with Peyton. Let’s free Eli from the Giants. The Giants ain’t going nowhere. Free Eli, send him to Denver.”
“Because the quarterbacking that they’re displaying right now, Elway has to be sick and throwing up in that wonderful luxury box he sits in during the game,” the eight-time All-Pro explained. “Free Eli, please.”
Freeing Eli may be a little bit easier said than done for the Broncos. Sure, he’s never been the best quarterback in the league and he is nearing the tail end of his career, but the fact remains that he has won multiple Super Bowls and he is still currently a starting NFL quarterback. Those don’t come cheap, especially when they have the last name of Manning.
That said, the Giants are an abysmal 1-6, so perhaps New York ownership would be willing to look ahead to the future and get rid of Manning if a few high draft picks are involved.
From Denver’s point of view, what’s to lose? Trevor Siemian likely isn’t the long-term answer and Paxton Lynch probably isn’t either. Brock Osweiler has never lived up to his potential and was “hot potatoed” back to Denver, so at this point, perhaps a big trade does make sense.
It would give Manning, the Broncos, and the Giants fresh life. A rare NFL win-win-win? Perhaps Sanders is onto something. This is either crazy or brilliant.
