Forget the interceptions. Forget the Chargers' 20-9 win over the Raiders. On Monday night, the real storyline out of Las Vegas was ESPN's Chris Fowler and a voice that had fans doing double takes. And double the scrolls on social media.

From the opening series, Fowler sounded off. Raspy, hoarse, downright sickly, the veteran broadcaster was clearly fighting through something while calling the second game of ESPN's Monday Night Football doubleheader. At times, NFL fans admitted they didn't even recognize him.
"Can we give Chris Fowler a day off?" Barstool's Dan "Big Cat" Katz posted on X. Others chimed in with jokes that Fowler sounded like Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants, while NBC's Patrick Daugherty quipped he hadn't "slept since the beginning of the U.S. Open."
It was all happening during a brutal night for Geno Smith, who threw three interceptions and struggled to move the ball against the Chargers' defense. As Fowler's voice cracked over the din of Allegiant Stadium, Smith's miscues only piled up — making for a long night for both quarterback and commentator.
Normally, Monday Night Football belongs to Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. But with ESPN splitting coverage between Texans-Buccaneers and Raiders-Chargers, Fowler got the late assignment alongside Louis Riddick and Dan Orlovsky.
It capped a hectic stretch for Fowler, who spent the past two weeks juggling the U.S. Open and the start of college football season.
Fowler never mentioned he was under the weather, but fans noticed anyway. And while the Chargers walked away with the win, Fowler walked away as the unexpected viral star of the night — hoarse voice and all.
