NBC Los Angeles reported that police responded to a home in the San Fernando Valley around 11 a.m.

Officers said the argument began verbally before escalating into a physical altercation. Anderson allegedly strangled the victim. He was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence and taken to jail. Records show he is being held on $50,000 bond. There is no timetable yet for a court appearance.

Anderson was one of the most popular backs in the league during the late 1990s. He spent all eight seasons of his NFL career with the Falcons, rushing for 5,336 yards and 34 touchdowns.

He made the Pro Bowl in 1998, ran for over 1,800 yards and helped Atlanta reach Super Bowl XXXIII. The Falcons lost to the Denver Broncos in that particular game.

He also gave the league one of its signature touchdown celebrations — the Dirty Bird.

He retired in 2001 because of a knee injury. Officially, he finished with nearly 7,000 yards of offense and 41 total touchdowns.

Anderson has had multiple legal issues in retirement. TMZ reported Tuesday's arrest was the latest incident and details remain limited as authorities continue working the case.

For now, he is in custody and the investigation is active.
