In a matter of weeks, Kirk Cousins will be on his way out of Atlanta. And this time, it is by design.

Cousins' recent contract modification with the Atlanta Falcons was essentially a handshake agreement that paved the way for his release early in free agency, as detailed by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The move sets up a post-June 1 designation, allowing the Falcons to split roughly $35 million in dead cap money over two seasons.

The mechanics matter here. By shifting the bulk of Cousins' 2026 salary into 2027, Atlanta lowered the cap figure it has to carry until the release officially hits the books on June 2. A $67.9 million guarantee that vests March 13 makes the timeline clear. Cousins will be released between the start of the league year on March 11 and the end of business the following day.

From Cousins' side, agreeing to the restructure prevented Atlanta from paying his $10 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the league year and then sitting on his rights well into the summer. That bonus was already guaranteed, but his $35 million base salary for 2026 was not. Without this adjustment, the Falcons could have delayed his exit until August.

There is also an offset at play. Because the roster bonus will not be paid, the first $10 million Cousins earns with his next team in 2026 will be credited back to Atlanta. That is unlikely to slow anything down. Cousins should clear that number easily on the open market.

The biggest takeaway is timing. Cousins will be available by the second day of the league year, not lingering in limbo while teams wait for clarity. Every quarterback-needy franchise now knows he is coming, which places him squarely in the middle of the offseason quarterback shuffle that will follow the coaching carousel.

Cousins has already earned more than $321 million in his career. The structure of this exit all but guarantees that number is still going up.
