The actor stars as former New York Giants running back John Tuggle in Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story, and the first images from the upcoming film have officially been released.
The movie chronicles Tuggle's remarkable journey after becoming the final pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, a distinction commonly known as "Mr. Irrelevant." While many players selected that late are quickly forgotten, Tuggle left a lasting impression on teammates, coaches and the entire Giants organization before his life was tragically cut short by cancer in 1986 at age 25.
Corenswet said Tuggle's story resonated with him because it asks bigger questions about resilience, optimism and finding grace during life's toughest challenges.
"What happens when a person who has defined himself by optimism and resilience is faced with a losing struggle?" Corenswet told PEOPLE.
The first-look photos show the actor transformed into the former NFL running back, including scenes of him training and moments alongside actress Isabel May, who portrays Tuggle's longtime love, Katie.
Director Jonathan Levine had plenty of praise for his leading man, saying Corenswet possessed the charm, warmth and emotional range necessary to bring Tuggle's story to life.
Levine even compared the role to Corenswet's superhero turn, calling Tuggle a "real-life superhero" whose legacy continues to inspire decades later.
The film also features Michael Shannon as legendary Giants coach Bill Parcells, with Levine describing Shannon as the perfect choice to capture both Parcells' intimidating reputation and softer side.
For Giants fans, the story carries special significance. Tuggle remained beloved within the organization long after his playing career ended. During the franchise's Super Bowl-winning 1986 season, players honored him by wearing his No. 38 on their helmets.
According to Levine, the goal was to create the kind of inspirational sports drama that audiences used to flock to in the 1980s, blending humor, heartbreak and hope into one unforgettable story.
Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story is scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas Day.
