Cody was charged of multiple misdemeanors relating to the death of his dog Taz, neglect to an illegally owned alligator, and minor drug charges. The courts eventually convicted Cody on multiple counts, and he had faced up to two years of time for his conviction.
The dog's death was ruled to be due to starvation, as previous reports note that the dog weighed under 50 pounds at the time of its death. The dog, a canary mastiff, weighed over 100 pounds when Cody originally received the animal. Cody's girlfriend was also convicted on animal cruelty charges and was sentenced to 60 days, according to the Sun.
Cody was a two-time All-American for the Crimson Tide, gaining nationwide exposure for his 360-pound frame at nose tackle. Cody then went on to play five years for the Baltimore Ravens after being drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
