The former Iowa standout and Harris County sheriff's deputy has died at 59, with officials calling his passing unexpected.

"Melvin was an incredible man and public servant," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, via Click 2 Houston. "He leaves behind a strong legacy."

Foster's story started in Houston.

He starred at Jack Yates High School, helping lead a state championship team before heading to Iowa. There, he became one of the Hawkeyes' top linebackers, leading the team in tackles during his junior and senior seasons and playing in the 1991 Rose Bowl.

He also earned All-American and All-State honors along the way.

After college, Foster had a brief stint with the Cowboys in 1992.

Then came the next chapter. He spent nearly 15 years with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, serving as a deputy and field training officer. That's where his leadership carried over, this time off the field.

Foster was later inducted into the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority Hall of Fame, another nod to the impact he made both in sports and in the community.

Foster's career took him from Friday nights to the Rose Bowl to public service.

Different roles, same presence. He showed up, did the job, and earned respect everywhere he went.
