Former Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Artis Hicks told Jeff Pearlman, the author of a new Brett Favre biography entitled "Gunslinger," that the Vikings had a similar bounty program under former coach Brad Childress during the 2009 season.
In a book excerpt published by Deadspin, Hicks told Pearlman that a bounty program was "part of the culture."
"I had coaches start a pot and all the veterans put in an extra $100, $200, and if you hurt someone special, you get the money," Hicks said. "There was a bottom line, and I think we all bought in: you're there to win, and if taking out the other team's best player helps you win, hey, it's nothing personal. Just business."
Childress is no longer the head coach in Minnesota, so it's unlikely the Vikings suffer any penalty for the bounty program. But with Roger Goodell in charge, who knows?
