Jonathan Lawson, chief investigator at the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office in South Carolina, confirmed Friday that the office had been notified of Redfern's death, according to the California Post. Further details, including a cause of death, were not provided.

Redfern was diagnosed with central nervous system lymphoma in May 2023 after doctors discovered a brain tumor, according to a fundraiser established to support his treatment.

His wife, Lauryl, wrote on Facebook last month that he was moving toward hospice care after his health deteriorated over the summer. She described him as "the love of my life" and said the family was focused on his comfort.

"His poor brain has had all it can take treatment wise so we want to make sure that he can be as comfortable as possible," she wrote.

Redfern handled kicking and punting duties at Wofford from 2010 through 2013. He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and subsequently spent time with the Chargers, Panthers, Browns, Lions, Cowboys and Falcons.

He appeared in four NFL regular-season games and averaged 42.1 yards per punt.

Texas Tech co-defensive coordinator Rob Greene, a former Wofford teammate and roommate, encouraged donations to Redfern's fundraiser in May. Greene's appeal highlighted the relationships Redfern maintained beyond football as he and his family navigated his illness.

"Great man, husband, father, and friend," Greene wrote in his tribute.
