The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback revealed during an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America that he seriously questioned his future in the sport during his college years.
"There was a time in college where I really questioned, 'What's going on? Where do I go from here?'" Hurts said, per a Fox News transcription.
At the time, adversity was piling up.
Hurts began his career as the starting quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide football, but his path changed dramatically when he was replaced during the 2018 SEC Championship Game by fellow quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
For many players, that might have been the end of the story. For Hurts, it was just a turning point.
He eventually transferred to the Oklahoma Sooners football, where he rebuilt his reputation and proved he belonged among the top quarterbacks in the country.
The Eagles selected Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and the rest has been a steady climb.
Since then, Hurts has helped lead Philadelphia to multiple Super Bowl appearances — including a championship victory over the Kansas City Chiefs — and captured Super Bowl MVP honors.
Looking back now, Hurts says perseverance made all the difference.
"My passion overcame every ounce of doubt," he said.
