With Ryan Fitzpatrick uncertain after sffering a sprained knee last week against Miami, the Jets may have to turn to untested backup Bryce Petty for Sunday's game with the Rams.
Head coach Todd Bowles says Fitzpatrick's status is up in the air at this point and he'll be evaluated on a daily basis.
"He's probably day-to-day," Bowles told nj.com Monday. "We'll know more as the week progresses. "I've got to see him run around a little bit on Wednesday and Thursday first."
Bowles said Petty would start if Fitzpatrick is unable to go Sunday, and, despite his complete lack of playing time—-he saw his first action Sunday against the Dolphins, taking four snaps and connecting on 2-of-2 for 19 yards when Fitzpatrick went down—-he has every confidence in the second-year Baylor product.
"Yeah, he'll be ready," Bowles said.

Fitzpatrick's injury adds more uncertainty to New York's bleak season outlook. At 3-6 and well off the pace in the AFC East, the Jets appear to have already locked themselves out of the postseason. On the flipside, however, Petty can't be much worse than Fitzpatrick's been. He leads the league in interceptions with 13 and has the worst QB rating of any starter (67.6).
So, regardless of Fitzpatrick's ability to take the field Sunday, it might just be in Bowles' best interests to see if Petty can provide that much-needed spark. Worst case scenario, they stay on the losing track.
