According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Del Rio is the favorite to join the presumed next New York head coach's staff. That supposed next head coach is Pat Shurmur.
Del Rio was 25-23 in his three years with the Raiders. This past season, Oakland went 6-10, with the team rating below average on both offense and defense. Many assume Del Rio was forced out in haste due to the franchise's chasing of Jon Gruden, which ultimately worked out for Mark Davis and company.
The report states that not only are the Giants interested in Del Rio, but the former Oakland coach has mutual feelings. All of this is contingent on Shurmur actually landing the job. The Giants are planning to schedule a second interview this week with Shurmur. If the Minnesota Vikings lose on Sunday, everything can be expedited to the point he could be officially signed by the franchise.
Del Rio started his coaching career with the New Orleans Saints as a strength coach in 1997 before moving over to the Baltimore Ravens in 1999 to become a linebackers coach. In 2002, he spent a season as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers prior to getting his first head coaching gig with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003. He held that position until 2011, then spent 2012-14 as the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.
Del Rio is scheduled to make roughly $6 million per year from the Raiders over the next three years. If the Giants want him, given that deal, they could likely get him at a discount.
