Report: Jaguars set to interview a coaching candidate, and it shows everything wrong with the team

If the Jaguars go in this direction, it is probably indicative of a larger issue.

The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to be a mess and the latest example arrives from the team's handling of its head coaching situation. Earlier this month, the Jags parted ways with head coach Gus Bradley, and while that was probably the right move given his lack of success, the franchise handled it poorly in having him fly back to Florida with the team. Now, the Jaguars have been linked to a very interesting candidate and, if true, it would point to a lack of overall direction in Jacksonville.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network brings word that former Giants and, amusingly, Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin will receive a look for the role. On the surface, this might make sense in that Coughlin is a two-time Super Bowl winner that previously engineered success with the franchise. However, Coughlin will be 71 (!) years old at the start of next season and certainly does not appear to be a candidate primed to stay in the role for a long period of time.

Coughlin might be the best football coach for a one-season sample and that does matter to seem degree. However, it smacks as a desperation play that could have something to do with PR and the Jaguars have a roster built much more for long-term success than immediate gratification. Other candidates will certainly emerge, but if the Jaguars went in the direction of Coughlin, it would not be the best look.
