As we approach the 2023 NFL Draft, we have some massive quarterback news unrelated to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed quarterback Jalen Hurts to a five-year, $255 million extension deal. As Rapoport notes, this makes Hurts the highest-paid player in NFL history. The deal is not fully guaranteed, either. It includes $179,304,000 in guaranteed dollars and a no-trade clause, which is a first for the Eagles and general manager Howie Roseman. Simply put, it pays to lead your team to a Super Bowl.
As pointed out by Tom Pelissero, also of NFL Network, the deal includes $15 million in incentives — meaning Hurts can earn up to $54 million annually.
Eagles fans can rest easy. No Jackson situation over there.
Hurts' Career With the Eagles

Hurts was drafted No. 53 overall in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In college, he played for Alabama before transferring to Oklahoma for his senior season.
Soon to turn 25, Hurts started four games in his rookie season, completing 52% of his passes for six touchdowns, throwing four interceptions and adding three rushing scores.
He became a full-time starter in 2021. The Eagles made the playoffs but lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round.
In 2022, Hurts took a massive step forward and was a potential MVP candidate, if not for an injury. He still played in 15 games, completing over 66% of his passes for 3701 yards, with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He added 760 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
The Eagles would go on to lose in the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs. Still, based on this contract, the Eagles have seen enough to be satisfied by Hurts, who will be under contract until he's 30 years old and can sign another new contract.
