Simply leading scoring drives was not the only way in which Hurts delivered on Sunday night. One of his touchdown passes was a 46-yard pass to DeVonta Smith. Hurts hit the speedy wide receiver on the run late in the third quarter to increase his team's lead to 33-0. Kicker Jake Elliott then nailed the extra point to make the score 34-0.
According to the NFL, Hurts' 72 rushing yards was a Super Bowl record for NFL quarterbacks. This surpassed the previous record (70), which Hurts set during Super Bowl 57.
"I couldn't be here without my teammates," Hurts said after winning MVP. "You know, the effort, the determination that everybody displayed to get to this point."
The Super Bowl MVP capped off a season in which Hurts posted a career-low in passing yards (2,903) but a career-high in completion percentage (68.7%). He also posted a career-high in touchdown percentage (5%).
The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback was not the sole engine powering the offense during the regular season. Running back Saquon Barkley was a key contributor while rushing for 2,005 yards. Hurts just needed to be efficient with the ball.
This trend continued when the playoffs began. Hurts only threw for 131 yards in the wild-card game against the Packers, but he tossed two touchdown passes. One week later, he threw for 128 yards against the Rams and rushed for one touchdown.
The NFC Championship against the Commanders was Hurts' biggest performance of the NFC playoffs. He threw for 246 yards and one touchdown. He also scored three rushing touchdowns on the Tush Push goal line play.
The win over the Commanders was Hurts' high-water mark of the playoffs until Super Bowl 59. He delivered a clutch performance and complemented a dominant defense that held the Chiefs' offense in check.
