Cutler discussed the possibility of returning to football during a recent appearance on Adam Schefter's podcast "Know Them From Adam," and he said he didn't think he'd be able to join a team and play during the middle of the season.
Cutler said the quarterback position is so challenging, and he wouldn't be able to sign with a team on Monday and play the following Sunday. However, he doesn't think Tony Romo would have as much trouble if he wanted to return to the field.
"I think Tony's situation, with possibly leaving the door open with Dallas, if that's what he's doing, is a little bit more realistic because he knows the system," Cutler said. "He knows the guys. He knows expectations. He's comfortable in the building.
"To go someplace completely foreign and try to learn a whole new system, develop timing with guys, especially on a team that's in a playoff race, that's a tall order."
Cutler didn't necessarily say he expects Romo to play again next season, but he did leave the door open for a return.
If something happened to Dak Prescott next season, the Cowboys would almost certainly make a call to Romo to gauge his interest in returning.
Romo might not be interested in returning to football, but if the right opportunity presented itself, he might contemplate making a comeback.
