The New York Jets' season has gone off the rails, and Tuesday's firing of GM Joe Douglas was just the latest twist in what's been a disastrous 2024 campaign.

Team owner Woody Johnson appears to be clearing house after the Jets' gut-wrenching 28-27 Week 11 loss to the Colts dropped them to 3-8. But this isn't just about Douglas or former coach Robert Saleh, who was dismissed earlier this month. The Aaron Rodgers experiment is looking more like a one-and-done situation in New York.
Rodgers, brought in as the supposed savior of the franchise, hasn't lived up to the hype in his first full season under center. Now, according to reports, his tenure may be coming to an end. In fact, if Johnson had his way, it might have been over weeks ago.
Reports from The Athletic suggest Johnson wanted Rodgers benched after an uninspired 10-9 loss to the Broncos in Week 4. The Jets were 2-2 at the time, but Johnson reportedly believed backup Tyrod Taylor could provide a spark. Those around the team were said to be "stunned" by the suggestion, with Douglas stepping in to explain that benching Rodgers would likely fracture the locker room and humiliate the star QB.
In hindsight, Johnson's frustration is somewhat understandable. The Jets have gone 1-6 since that meeting, and Rodgers hasn't exactly lit it up. But instead of salvaging the season, the Jets are left with a clean slate—and not much to show for their bold offseason gamble.
Where the Jets go from here is anyone's guess. A new GM, a new coach, and probably a new quarterback are on the horizon. As for Rodgers? His future with the team looks as murky as the Jets' 2024 season has been.
