Jets reverse decision, will now allow soccer coach to kick for $100 grand

It looked like a long shot was taken away. Now it is back on. The New York Jets have reversed course and will allow longtime fan Ashley Castanio-Gervasi to attempt a kick for $100,000 this weekend at MetLife Stadium, days after she was initially ruled ineligible over a technicality.

The decision came after Castanio-Gervasi, a Long Island soccer coach, received widespread support across the sports world following reports that she had been pulled from the contest despite qualifying.

"We realized there was an unfortunate misunderstanding regarding Ashley's eligibility for the contest," the Jets said in a statement to the New York Post. "In an effort to remedy the situation, we are allowing her to kick this Sunday for an opportunity to win the prize. We value the passion and loyalty of our fans and are committed to creating memorable experiences."

Castanio-Gervasi, who coaches girls varsity soccer at Long Beach High School, earned her spot by converting a 20-yard kick at a tailgate event during the Jets' October game against Carolina.

She was later informed she would not be permitted to participate in the on-field "Kick for Cash" contest at halftime of Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

According to the report, the reversal stemmed from an insurance restriction that applied to coaches and recent athletes. The decision drew criticism from fans and media figures, including former Jet Damien Woody and radio host Jake Asman, turning the situation into a trending topic online.

Before learning she had been removed from the contest, Castanio-Gervasi was practicing kicks at her high school field, connecting from 25 yards as her players cheered her on. The Jets have not yet disclosed the distance she will be asked to attempt Sunday.
