Taylor, 36, returns to the franchise that drafted him in 2011. And this decision didn't sneak up on anyone. Glenn said last Friday he was "evaluating everything," his clearest signal yet that a change was coming.

Fields gave him little reason to stay the course. The former No. 11 pick threw for just 116 yards in last week's 27-14 loss to the Patriots, continuing a brutal stretch for a passing attack ranked dead last in the league at 139.9 yards per game.

Fields has produced only 505 passing yards over his last five starts. New York hoped a two-year, $40 million deal would unlock upside they believed Chicago and Pittsburgh failed to tap into. It hasn't happened.

Fields is signed through 2026 and set to make $20 million that year, but his future in New York is suddenly cloudy. The Jets are 2-8 and currently projected to pick fifth in the 2026 draft. With two first-rounders in 2026 — and three more in 2027 from the Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams trades — the Jets will have the ammo to chase a quarterback if they choose.

There were earlier hints this could happen. Glenn nearly switched to Taylor in Week 8, but the veteran was scratched late with a knee issue. Fields responded with his best outing of the season and bought himself time, but the momentum never held.

Fields ranks 30th in QBR (37.7), with seven touchdowns, one interception, and 1,259 passing yards. He is New York's second-leading rusher — 383 yards, four scores — but the passing game continues to stall.

Taylor has one start this season. He threw two touchdowns and nearly rallied the Jets past Tampa Bay in Week 3. For now, Glenn is hoping the steady veteran can give the offense a spark and stabilize a position that has derailed the franchise for years.
