San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will have a limited role as training camp opens while he continues recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash earlier this month, general manager John Lynch said Saturday.

Lynch said Shanahan is still experiencing lingering effects from a concussion and is being treated similarly to a player in the NFL's concussion protocol.
"Kyle basically is going to be like in the protocol," Lynch told reporters. "The doctors dictate how he comes back, when he comes back."
Assistant head coach Chris Foerster will serve as acting head coach while Shanahan gradually resumes his duties.
"Chris is the acting head coach, but it is going to be very much a collective effort," Lynch said.
Shanahan was injured in a July 14 crash near his Northern California home. According to ESPN, he sustained a concussion, a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand and facial lacerations requiring 40 stitches.
He was treated at a hospital and released the same day. The other driver was not injured. The 49ers said Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis as he continues his recovery.
Police said both drivers cooperated with investigators, and no citations were issued. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the crash or determined whether either driver was at fault.
Lynch said Shanahan's recovery is not expected to affect the team's plans for its season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.
