According to longtime sports reporter Rich Cimini, police in Davie County (Florida) have declared the case inactive. The investigation is complete, and they will not bring charges against Smith. Further action on the police's part depends on additional evidence being brought forward.
"No further investigative steps can be reasonably taken with the information presently available," the investigator's report stated, per Cimini.
The investigation began after a woman named Kristen called the police and made assault allegations, which became part of a video she filmed with her cell phone. It was in this video that she and Smith, who returned to the Jets over the offseason, argued.
"Geno just beat my (expletive), that's why," Kristen said after Smith told someone on the phone that she had called the police. "You ran outside and attacked me, (expletive)."
The video continued with her running into the street before turning back and going to the driveway. She filmed Smith sitting in the driver's side of an SUV, and she made other accusations. She also filmed Smith talking to the police in front of the home.
"Today is the DAY! GENO SMITH beat my (expletive) cause he HATES taking care of his special needs kid and can't be left alone with him because he'd rather watch s*x online and play Call of Duty," the woman wrote in the social media video. She also wrote "Charges pressed" before the video ended.
Cimini, in his reporting, noted that Smith told the police that he didn't know how to operate the security cameras outside of his home.
The quarterback told the authorities they would have to speak with the security company to review the footage. However, he provided footage from his Ring camera, which did not show any physical altercations.
