The Dolphins announced Fernandez's death Tuesday.
Fernandez played a major role in one of the most dominant stretches in NFL history, helping lead Miami to three consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1971-73, including the franchise's undefeated 1972 championship season.
"His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins' success throughout the early 1970s," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history."
Fernandez starred on the defensive unit nicknamed the "No-Name Defense," a label widely credited to former Tom Landry after Miami lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl VI.
The Dolphins responded the following season with a perfect 17-0 record, still the only undefeated season in NFL history.

Miami's defense led the NFL in scoring defense that year, allowing just 12.2 points per game while recording three shutouts. Fernandez contributed five sacks during the regular season and delivered one of the signature performances of his career in Super Bowl VII, finishing with 17 tackles and a sack in Miami's victory over Washington.
During Miami's three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, Fernandez totaled 28 tackles and three sacks.
Originally signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 1968, Fernandez spent his entire eight-year professional career with the franchise. He later earned recognition in the team's Ring of Honor both individually and as part of the undefeated 1972 team.
Fernandez finished his career with unofficial totals of 35 regular-season sacks and 4.5 playoff sacks in 113 games.
